BLUE LIGHT AND YOUR CHILDREN’S VISION

How to protect your children’s eye from blue light?

Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum that can be seen by human eyes. It has a short wavelength, which means it produces higher amounts of energy. It may affect vision and could prematurely age the eyes.

Keeping our children’s eyes healthy and safe requires a parent or caregiver to always be thinking ahead. Often, we will only address eye problems as they arise, but anticipating situations before they happen is always best. If there is a chronic exposure to blue light from smartphones, tablets, and computer screens is an issue, there are a few ways to decrease exposure to blue light:

Wear blue light blocking eyeglasses.

Blue light blocking eyeglasses are made with special spectrum control technology to absorb blue light. It will reduce eye strain and protect your eyes from electronic devices.

Screen time

Decrease the amount of time spent in front of these screens and/or take frequent breaks to give your eyes a rest.

 Follow 20/20 Rule

Look away from the screen every 20 minutes, focus on an object at least 20 feet away, for at least 20 seconds.

 Use a screen filter

These are especially helpful if your younger children use computers for games or schoolwork. These help to filter the direct blue light coming from the screens.

Take advantage of ” comfort view’ settings

This setting changes the sharp screen light to a warmer light with less contrast between the screen and the surrounding light.

One of the greatest struggles we’ve experienced as parents has been how to foster digital savvy-ness in our children – while we don’t want to shield them from today’s latest technology we want to make sure that what they’re experiencing is still helping their little brains grow.

Worried about your child’s intellectual capability? Can gadgets help you?
